Development Overview

The Charlesview Residences broke ground on May 16, 2011. The plan to build 340 units of housing, 15,000 square feet of commercial/retail space, and a 10,000 square-foot community center grew out of a multi-year planning process that resulted in a land swap with Harvard University and a partnership with The Community Builders.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating near completion of the first phase of the new Charlesview Residences was held on June 21, 2013. The new complex provides new housing for the residents at the outdated 213-unit Charlesview Apartments at nearby Barry’s Corner as well as additional rental and homeownership units. Specifically there will be a total of 240 units of mixed-income rental housing (phase 1) 20 units of affordable home-ownership units (phase 2) and 80 for-sale condominiums (phase 3).

Development of Charlesview Residences will yield multiple benefits to the community. Utilization of the 9-acre Brighton Mills site where Frugal Fanny’s and Kmart once stood turns a blighted, vacant lot into much-needed quality housing. Commercial/retail  development will generate economic activity and jobs and The Josephine A. Fiorentino Community Center will be a dynamic hub of community activity. New streets have been built. A playground and other open space will be available for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.
